#TBT: In the late summer of 1927, participants in the Dole Air Race took off from California’s Oakland Municipal Airport. Held just a couple of months after Charles Lindberg’s groundbreaking first nonstop flight across the Atlantic, Hawaiian Pineapple Company (later reorganized as the Dole Food Company) founder James Dole offered a $25,000 prize to the first pilots who could complete the journey from Oakland to Honolulu.

Although it was one of the last to take off, the Phillips Petroleum Company sponsored Travel Air 5000 monoplane Woolaroc was the first to land in Hawaii after a 26-hour flight over the open Pacific. Today, visitors to Woolaroc Museum & Wildlife Preserve can see this original plane hanging in the museum section alongside many other one-of-a-kind historic treasures.
